The former England all-rounder is helping out the national side as a temporary assistant to limited-overs coach Ashley Giles.
Collingwood will remain with England until the end of the World Twenty20 with Giles a possible candidate to take over as Test coach - following Andy Flower's resignation earlier this year.
This could mean a permanent opportunity within the national set up for the 37-year-old who has pledged his loyalty to his county.
He said: "I'm determined to play for Durham this summer.
"Durham are down to the bare bones in terms of personnel, so to lose a captain would be a bit harsh at the last second."
As for a role with England, Collingwood added: "We'll have to see who's head coach first of all.
"It would certainly be a tricky decision to make if that scenario came around."
