West Indies duo Sulieman Benn and Kemar Roach shared nine wickets as New Zealand were dismissed for 293 after opting to bat first in the third Test at the Kensington Oval, Barbados.
Left-arm spinner Benn claimed his first Test five-wicket haul for four years, finishing with figures of 5-93 and fast bowler Roach took out three of the top four among his 4-61.
West Indies closed on 32-0 in reply in the winner-takes-all deciding match.
Kane Williamson (43) and Ross Taylor (45) put on 74 either side of lunch to guide New Zealand away from early trouble at 28-2, Roach having accounted for openers Hamish Rutherford (4) and Tom Latham (14).
But both fell short of their half-centuries and Benn worked his way through the middle order, despite the best efforts of Jimmy Neesham.
Neesham was eventually run out for 78 after putting on 64 with Mark Craig for the eighth wicket. Craig batted through for 46 not out.
West Indies openers Chris Gayle (18no) and Kraigg Brathwaite (11no) safely negotiated nine overs before stumps to reduce West Indies' deficit to 261 heading into day two.
