Dale Steyn led the way with 5-33 as South Africa beat New Zealand by 204 runs in the second Test at Centurion to win the two-match series 1-0.

Having been set an unlikely 400 to win, the tourists slumped to 7-4 and were eventually dismissed for 195, as South Africa triumphed with more than a day to spare.

The South Africans began the day on 105-6 and led by 370, having scored 481-8 in their first knock and then dismissed New Zealand for 214.

They added 27 runs in 13 overs in the first hour of day four before declaring on 132-7, Vernon Philander (14) the one man to fall, bowled when he shouldered arms at Tim Southee (3-46), while Temba Bavuma finished on 40 not out.

The tourists were left needing their highest ever successful Test run chase but their innings was soon in tatters as a fired-up Steyn tore in with the new ball.

He opened his account with the first ball of the innings, Tom Latham (0) playing on, and Martin Guptill also went for a golden duck, edging the final ball of the over to Hashim Amla at slip.

Ross Taylor did not go first ball but became the third top-order batsman to make a duck when he was lbw to Steyn in the third over.

And it was 7-4 when skipper Kane Williamson slashed at a Philander (2-34) delivery outside off stump and was brilliantly caught by wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock, diving away to his right.

Henry Nicholls (76) then led a revival which took the Black Caps to respectability, adding 68 for the fifth wicket with BJ Watling (32) and 46 for the seventh with Doug Bracewell (30).

But Philander trapped Bracewell lbw, before Kagiso Rabada (2-54) struck twice, and Steyn then wrapped up the victory, and his 26th Test five-wicket haul, when Nicholls top-edged him to Rabada at deep fine-leg.
