Kaushal Silva scored his ninth test half century to help Sri Lanka to 140-3 at stumps on the second day of the second test against India at Colombo on Friday.

Sri Lanka were in trouble on 1-1 in reply to India's first innings total of 393 when Dimuth Karunaratne (1) was trapped lbw by fast bowler Umesh Yadav in the second over.

But a 74-run second wicket stand between Silva and Kumar Sangakkara (32), playing in his last international, steadied the ship for Sri Lanka. Silva would go on to score 51 off 118 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries, before being caught at short fine leg by Ravichandran Ashwin off leg spinner Amit Mishra.

India began the second day on 319-6 but made steady progress after the dismissals of Ashwin (2) and Mishra (24), with Wriddhiman Saha adding 37 to his overnight score, before being trapped lbw by Rangana Herath on 56.

Ishant Sharma (2) fell soon after as Herath claimed his fourth wicket of the innings to finish with figures of 4-81.

Sangakkara walked to the crease for the penultimate innings of his 134-Test career to rapturous applause after the loss of Karunaratne early on.

The 37-year-old struck four fours in his 87-ball innings before he succumbed to a smart Ajinkya Rahane catch at slip off Ashwin prior to Silva's dismissal.

Lahiru Thirimanne (28) and captain Angelo Matthews (19) remained unbeaten at stumps at the end of day two.
