Coach Darren Lehmann wants Australia's batsmen to play "smarter" cricket in Monday's ICC World Twenty20 clash with Bangladesh in Bangalore.

Both sides are in need of a victory after suffering defeats in their opening Group 2 matches, Australia slumping to an eight-run loss to New Zealand, while Bangladesh were comprehensively beaten by Pakistan.

Chasing a conservative target of 143 against the Black Caps in Dharamsala on Friday, Australia were 50-1 after the powerplay overs before falling away after struggling to cope with New Zealand's spinners.

"(Steve) Smith, (David) Warner, (Glenn) Maxwell, (Mitchell) Marsh, the whole lot of them, they need to be smarter," Lehmann told www.cricket.com.au.

"They know that. They don't mean to play the shots they play. At the end of the day we've just got to be better.

"We had a really good start, we should close that game out. Not comfortably but we should close it out from 1-50."

Aaron Finch

Lehmann hinted Aaron Finch could return in place of Usman Khawaja for the clash with Bangladesh, after the world's No 1 ranked T20 batsman was left out of the line-up against New Zealand.

"He [Khawaja] played beautifully but it depends," Lehmann said.

"We've got Bangladesh in Bangalore, so we'll work out what the best option is for that game and play it from there.

"It was very tough [to leave Finch out of the XI]. Aaron has played very well in T20 cricket. We just wanted the left, right-hander [opening combination]. That could change for the next game."

Bangladesh team manager Khaled Mahmud admitted his side had not lived up to expectations against Pakistan but says the Tigers are in good shape as they target a first-ever T20 win over Australia.

"Yes, we all know that we did not play according to expectations in the first match," Mahmud told the Dhaka Tribune.

"But in T20s, there will be bad days. I hope we will get back our rhythm against Australia. All the players are boosted up."
