As England head home after a dismal end to their tour of India, Rob Key runs the rule over the players to have taken to part in the tourists’ ODI and T20I series defeats…

Jason Roy - 7/10
ODI: 220 runs @ 73.33, T20I: 61 runs @ 20.33

I thought he was outstanding in the 50-over cricket without going on to get a massive score. He gave England explosive starts as you need in that format.

Sam Billings - 6/10
ODI: 35 runs @ 35.00, T20I: 34 runs @ 11.33

He's shown what talent he has and a couple of knocks that he's had have helped England win games. I thought the first ODI that he played - the third ODI - was a crucial knock in tough conditions, a crucial opening partnership and in the first T20 too. Again, he hasn't got a big score that he would have liked but he has played an important role.

Joe Root - 7/10
ODI: 132 runs @ 66.00, T20I: 126 runs @ 63.00

He's just an absolute banker in all formats really and England are lucky to have him. Whatever the conditions, he can play an innings accordingly. The final T20I didn't go as he'd have liked but no one will be more frustrated by that than him.

Eoin Morgan - 8/10

He came in under a lot of pressure, especially after missing Bangladesh, and any doubts over him, he needed to silence. He did that with a brilliant hundred and I think his captaincy has been outstanding.

Ben Stokes - 7/10
ODI: 120 runs @ 60.00 and five wickets @ 43.00, T20I: 46 runs @ 23.00 and two wickets @ 45.00

He just balances the team, bowls crucial overs and has continued to show in subcontinent conditions, as he did in Bangladesh, that he can produce. He showed great character as well at Eden Gardens to go out and bowl so well there, in particular. He's the heartbeat of the England team and you don't see just how much everyone feeds off him in the field as well.

Jos Buttler - 6/10
ODI: 52 runs @ 17.33, T20I: 15 runs @ 7.50

Morgan believes his side should have already won the T20 series against India, before yesterday's defeat in Bangalore

He's been excellent with the gloves, to the extent that you haven't noticed him. But he hasn't had a huge amount of opportunities with the bat and by his standards, he has had a quiet time when he has been given a chance.

Moeen Ali - 7/10
ODI: 85 runs @ 28.33 and no wickets, T20I: Three runs @ 3.00 and three wickets @ 23.66

I've given him a seven but his bowling in the T20s has been at least an eight. He scored crucial runs in the 50-over game at Cuttack, hitting a half-century, and his bowling in the T20s has been exceptional.

Chris Jordan - 7/10
T20I: Five wickets @ 21.00

He's enhanced England's white-ball cricket with his death bowling. He's been so good at the death that England will feel that they have to try and find a way to get him into the 50-over side, but he does need to some a bit more than just death bowling.

Liam Plunkett - 6/10
ODI: Three wickets @ 52.00, T20I: Two wickets @ 27.00

Often he is on the undercard and he has been left out of a few games in the two white-ball series. When he has played though, he hasn't let England down at all.

Adil Rashid - 5/10
ODI: No wickets, T20I: One wicket @ 47.00

He was left out of the final two games in the one-day series in the end because they play on such small grounds, it's not really suited to a leg-spinner. It's not turned too much and the grounds have been too small a lot of the time. I do think that he is absolutely vital to England's cause going forward though.

Tymal Mills - 8/10
T20I: Three wickets @ 31.33

He has been a revelation really. That extra bit of pace and the skill that he has with the ball out of the back of the hand - the slower ball - has added a different dimension to England's bowling. They didn't have it in the 50-over games without him. I don't think any of the Indian batsmen have looked comfortable with his pace and he has done all of them with his slower ball. The team have fed off him.

Alex Hales - 4/10
ODI: 23 runs @ 11.50

Like Morgan, he will have been keen to impress after missing the series in Bangladesh but his injury in the second ODI cut his tour short before he had a chance to get going. He's still first choice to open with Jason Roy but you'd expect Sam Billings will have another chance to stake his claim in the West Indies.

Jonny Bairstow - 6/10
ODI: 56 runs @ 56.00

It shows the strength of England's one-day team that a player of the class of Jonny Bairstow can't get in there regularly. He never lets the side down and batted well in the one ODI he did play.

Chris Woakes - 7/10
ODI: Six wickets @ 29.83 and 48 runs @ 24.00

I still think there is more to come from him and the last ODI that he played, he got it right at the death to close out the game. He should be looking to become one of England's bankers in the last few overs, he's already brilliant with the new ball.

David Willey - 6/10
ODI: Three wickets @ 29.00

He bowled very well with the new ball, he just needs to find another dimension to his bowling so that he can have more of an impact when the new ball wears off.

Liam Dawson - 5/10
T20I: No wickets

Live One-Day International Cricket

He hasn't had much opportunity but I certainly think he deserves to be in the Champions Trophy squad. He just has to learn very quickly; bowling on these flatter wickets and small grounds is not easy.

Jake Ball - 7/10
ODI: Five wickets @ 40.60

I thought he was excellent. The ODI that England won, he bowled some crucial overs at the back end and held his nerve brilliantly. There's a lot of competition for places but certainly I think he showed good skill at the back end and you would say the window of opportunity is open for him to fill one of those roles.
