Although it was Lewis Hamilton who stole the headlines as he claimed a record-equalling pole position, it was a good day for Ferrari as Sebastian Vettel salvaged a front-row starting berth.

But it was a bittersweet afternoon at Renault, at least on Jolyon Palmer's side of the garage, while Williams lurched to a new low and Fernando Alonso's patience - not for the first time - came close to snapping.
