Reigning F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton took part in a special five-a-side game featuring some of his Arsenal heroes

It must be every Arsenal fan’s dream to line up on the same pitch as some of the club’s greatest players, but that dream has become a reality for F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton after he appeared in a football five-a-side match against a team of legends led by Sky Sports’ Thierry Henry.

Rolling back the years with a little help from team-mates past and present, Henry took a starring role alongside the Mercedes driver in a specially-arranged match in London on Monday morning.

While Thierry lined up alongside Sky Sports colleagues Jamie Carragher, Jamie Redknapp and Paul Merson with former Chelsea stopper Carlo Cudicini in goal, Hamilton swapped his racing suit for an Arsenal classic shirt to join forces with former Gunners Sol Campbell, Ray Parlour and Robert Pires, with Soccer AM’s Tubes between the sticks.

Speaking just hours after finishing the Spanish GP in second place, Hamilton admitted he was approaching the match with both excitement and trepidation.

“I’m super-buzzed for this," he told Sky Sports News HQ’s Craig Slater. "I’ve been an Arsenal fan since l was five but I haven’t played for 15 years so I’m just going to be passing and kicking it away whenever it comes to me!"

In the event, Hamilton held his own against the stars and the match ended 5-5 with the winners only emerging after a penalty shoot-out.

“It was great, my heart was racing quite a lot throughout the whole thing," the Mercedes driver told Sky Sports. "It was so much fun getting to play with all these guys on the pitch after you’ve been watching them for so many years, it was very surreal.”
