Lewis Hamilton took his 44th career pole as Mercedes once again dominated proceedings, but it was a nightmare day for fellow British driver Jenson Button who developed engine problems in Practice Three and missed qualifying as a result.
It was also a bad day for Sebastian Vettel who made a Q1 exit thanks to unreliability problems and was later penalised further for overtaking under red flags during practice.
