GP2 champ using this year to "prepare" for 2017, but insists McLaren race seat isn't assured; Deal to race in Japan Super Formula close

McLaren reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne says he has been given no guarantees about stepping up to a race seat at the team in 2017.
The 23-year-old Belgian has emerged in recent years as one of motorsport's brightest young talents and last year enjoyed a record-breaking season in which he became GP2 champion with four races to spare.
However, while the Belgian feels he is already ready for F1, he insists he hasn't been assured of a race seat by McLaren's management.
"Nothing has been promised, but I'm working my way to F1," Vandoorne said. "That's definitely where I want to be.
"I already wanted to be there this year and I feel 100 per cent ready to be there. Unfortunately, there were no places available for this season and so I have to work towards 2017 and get the best preparation as possible."
