Ajax have made contact with Southampton over the signing of Dusan Tadic, according to Sky sources.
Sky sources understand that negotiations continue between the clubs over a prospective deal for the 29-year-old.
One source has told Sky Sports News that Tadic is likely to leave Southampton, with the winger believing it is the right time to return to Dutch football.
Tadic, who is currently away with Serbia at the World Cup, scored seven goals in 41 appearances last season as Southampton struggled to a 17th-place finish.
He has two years remaining on his current contract at St Mary's.
Tadic started his career with Serbian side Vojvodina before moving to the Netherlands in 2010, when he signed for Groningen.
After a two-season spell with Groningen, Tadic moved to Twente and enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career so far, scoring 32 goals in 85 appearances before joining Southampton in 2014.
Southampton are preparing for their first full season under manager Mark Hughes, but are yet to add to their squad this summer.
