Rory McIlroy puts himself in prime position to win the Irish Open after this shot on the 18th

Rory McIlroy struck one of the finest five-woods of his career at the 72nd hole to ensure an emotional victory in front of his home fans at the Irish Open.

McIlroy looked to be heading for defeat to Russell Knox when the Scot birdied the 14th and 15th to edge one stroke clear at the top of the leaderboard, but the tournament host vaulted back into the lead at the 16th.

With Knox having to lay up at the par-five, McIlroy smote a 270-yard three-wood to the heart of the green to set up a two-putt birdie, while Knox three-putted from 35 feet to card a damaging bogey-six.

But McIlroy saved his best for the final hole, where he defied the pressure and the expectations of the partisan galleries to lace a stunning five-wood from just over 250 yards to within two feet of the cup to set up a tap-in for eagle.
