Richard Boxall has a memorable Open story to tell, but it brings back painful memories of his unfortunate and ill-timed leg break during the third round in 1991.

Boxall, winner of the Italian Open the previous season, was just two shots off the lead at the halfway stage after opening rounds of 71 and 69, and he was paired with Colin Montgomerie for "Moving Day" at Royal Birkdale.

The Sky Sports commentator had complained of 'twinges' in his left leg during the practice rounds, but he put the problem behind him to reach the halfway stage in a tie for 10th.

But the injury was noticeably worse while he warmed up on Saturday morning, and his tournament was over on the ninth tee.

Boxall hit a one-iron off the tee and immediately collapse in a heap - his left leg had snapped. "And what a noise it made," said Boxy, who did not play competitive golf again until the following February.
