Henrik Stenson holed out for birdie at the last to win his first major at The Open on a breathtaking final afternoon at Royal Troon on Sunday.

The Swede started the day one shot clear of Mickelson and recovered from a bogey at the first to produce a stunning major-championship record-equalling round of 63, eight under par.

The 145th Open

His effort featured 10 birdies and took him to a 20-under total to finally win his first major by a three-stroke margin with the lowest overall score in Open history.

He also became the first Scandinavian man to win a major and the first player from continental Europe to lift the Claret Jug since Seve Ballesteros in 1988.

But the 40-year-old's winning putt on the last took nerves of steel as he holed a monster 20-foot birdie putt to bring a fitting end to an astonishing day.

"You saw Phil's putt, it was a couple of revolutions from going in and then you know you got a two-putt so I tried to leave that one short, but when it's your day you might as well do it," Stenson said at The Sky Cart.
