Charley Hoffman's opening shot at The 146th Open was not ideal as he blocked his tee-shot into the rough, but his second was perfect and found the hole for an eagle!

The American made a phenomenal start to the Masters back in April as his first-round 65 in fierce winds was four shots better than the field, and he certainly made an early impression on day one at Royal Birkdale.

He looked anxious on the first tee as his ball headed towards the out-of-bounds markers, where several of his peers had ended up in the early stages with the first 24 players out playing the opening hole in a combined 23 over par.

But Hoffman's ball pulled up a few yards short of the white posts, and he took full advantage as he gouged his second out of the rough towards the green, just hoping to catch the putting surface and get out of jail with a par.

However, he ended up two strokes better off as his ball bounded into the cup for an eagle-two, and on a hole which had yielded only a handful of birdies up to that point.
