Justin Gatlin broke the 10-second mark for the first time this year with victory in the men's 100 metres at Saturday's Diamond League meeting in Shanghai.
The American ran 9.94 seconds, 0.03 outside the world-leading time this year set last month by Qatar's Femi Ogunode - who was second on this occasion in 10.07sec.
Gatlin's compatriot Michael Rodgers was third with St Kitts & Nevis veteran Kim Collins fourth.
Omar McLeod ran a world-leading 12.98sec, one hundredth of a second outside his personal best, to win a star-studded 110m hurdles from fellow Jamaican Hansle Parchment. Of the American challengers, David Oliver was fifth with Aries Merritt disqualified for a false start.
Michael Tinsley won in the 400m hurdles, with fellow American Kerron Clement and Puerto Rico's Javier Culson well down the field.
France's Renaud Lavillenie was beaten into second place in the pole vault by Sam Kendricks, another American winner.
Lavillenie reached 5.83m but while Kendricks cleared 5.88m at his first attempt, the Frenchman failed twice there and once at 5.93m.
Veronica Campbell-Brown was beaten by the Ivory Coast's Murielle Ahoure in the women's 200m while Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas won the 400m in 50.45sec, with Novlene Williams-Mills back in fourth.
Britain's Lorraine Ugen was fifth in the women's long jump, collecting two points in the Diamond Race, with Ivana Spanovic, Christabel Nettey and Tianna Bartoletta the top three. Dan Bramble was eighth in the men's event.
Michael Rimmer was ninth in the men's 800m, with Kenyan star David Rudisha only fifth in a race won by compatriot Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich.
