Cincinnati Bengals defender Adam 'Pacman' Jones banned for season opener

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones has been issued a one-game suspension by the NFL for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

The 33-year-old veteran of 10 NFL seasons was arrested in January on a charge of felony harassment with a bodily substance plus misdemeanour charges of assault, disorderly conduct and obstructing official business.

Charges stemmed from an altercation between Jones and a security guard at a Cincinnati hotel. Prosecutors dropped the felony charge and Jones entered a guilty plea to the obstruction charge last May. A state court imposed a sentence of his two days of time served and court fees.

In a letter to Jones, the NFL noted the "extensive video documentation of the tone, tenor and nature of your interactions with law enforcement at the site of your arrest, during transportation to the jail, and during the booking process."

"As you acknowledged, your post-arrest words and actions reflected poorly on you and your family, the Cincinnati Bengals football club, and the NFL. While it is our understanding that appropriate apologies have been publicly extended, they do not completely negate your behaviour and admission of culpability for the underlying conduct."

Jones will miss the Bengals' September 10 season and home opener against the Baltimore Ravens. He is eligible to return the next day as the Bengals have only three days to prepare for a September 14 home game against Houston.

Jones, who will be able participate in all pre-season practices and exhibition games, made 66 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and deflected seven passes over 16 games last season.
