New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has been charged with assault and robbery after an incident in Pittsburgh last weekend.

Revis is accused of knocking out two men in the city's popular South Side, after an argument in the street.

Revis' attorney told ESPN that the player was hurt in the incident and required medical treatment.

Police say one of the two men spotted Revis on the street and began following and filming him. Revis is then alleged to have grabbed the phone, and throw it away.

The alleged victim and another man then confronted Revis - both say they were punched, and their next memory is waking up and talking to police.

Revis has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one of robbery and another of conspiracy - plus a misdemeanour count of 'terroristic threats'.

A Jets spokesman confirmed they are aware of the incident and have spoken with the player and the NFL is also looking into it.

Jones told US reporters that Revis was "physically assaulted while at the location by a group of at least five people".

"It's my understanding that when Darrelle turned around he wasn't sure whether it was a weapon or a phone," Jones said.

"He didn't know. He just knows he left, these guys were saying his name, he turns around and sees an object and he wasn't sure what it was or whether he was going to get robbed or assaulted or what. He feared for his safety."

Revis signed a five-year, $70m contract in 2015 but had a poor season.
