New York Jets quarter-back Geno Smith will be out for six to ten weeks after being punched by his own team mate IK Enemkpali

New York Jets' Geno Smith is set to miss up to 10 weeks after suffering a broken jaw.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles revealed on Tuesday that the quarterback received the injury after being "sucker-punched" in the locker room by team-mate Ikemefuna "I.K." Enemkpali.

Smith's jaw was reportedly broken in two places. The Jets have released Enemkpali following the incident.

"You can't tolerate that," said Bowles.

"When you have a team and a bunch of side issues, you can't tolerate that. It's something that happened in the locker room and we're dealing with it internally and that's what we'll do."

Smith is now expected to miss the start of the regular NFL season. The 24 year-old's starting line-up place is expected to be filled by former Cincinnati Bengal Ryan Fitzpatrick.

"I'll let them [Smith and Enemkpali] tell you," Bowles said.

"It's something very childish that sixth-graders could have talked about. If they want to tell you what happened, they'll tell you what happened."

Enemkpali was previously suspended in 2011 while attending Louisiana Tech following an arrest for punching an off-duty police officer during a bar brawl. He also was ordered to attend an anger management course and perform 32 hours of community service after being found guilty of simple battery.
