Great things have been expected from Cue Card ever since he burst into the public's conscience with a hugely impressive 8 length victory in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival. He was more or less footperfect on his introduction to hurdling at Aintree and the manner of that success served to increase the excitement about his prospects. This represented a step up in class but, in truth, he really only had Dunraven Storm to beat and Philip Hobbs' hurdler doesn't appear to be at the top of the pecking order in his own yard let alone across the board. Irish raider Ballyadam Brook took them along at a sensible pace until three from home when Dunraven Storm took over the running with Cue Card still travelling strongly in third and the remainder already beaten. Joe Tizzard jumped the second last alongsides Dunraven Storm and was still hard on the bit with Richard Johnson busy aboard his mount on the inside. It wasn't until they rounded the final turn and approached the last that Joe Tizzard asked Cue Card to go on; he was springheeled at the final flight and quickened clear under hands and heels to win by 8 lengths with 10 lengths back to the third. Stiffer tasks await but he wasn't extended to win as he liked and one can only guess how much more there is to come from this four year old son of King's Theatre. His odds were slashed for both the Supreme Novices' and the Champion Hurdle with Timeform reporting that he had recorded and unusually high figure for the time of year and it's hard to argue with the reaction to this performance from a hugely talented prospect.
