Hull KR head coach Tim Sheens says Danny McGuire needs time to settle ahead of Super League season

Tim Sheens does not subscribe to the popular opinion that new signing Danny McGuire will be Hull KR's go-to player this season.

The former Great Britain half-back, who is Super League's all-time leading try-scorer, joined Rovers on a two-year contract after inspiring Leeds to an eighth Grand Final triumph in October.

But despite his Old Trafford heroics and glittering CV, his new coach has made it clear the 35-year-old has to start all over again at Hull KR.

Sheens said: "Leeds at the start of the year were being criticised that they were struggling and by the end of the year they went through and won the competition, and Danny had a blinder.

"We're not expecting that from him every week, no one can. I think Danny's leadership qualities and his professionalism have certainly added to the group.

"But I'm not putting Danny a million miles in front of a lot of the players here, I'm telling you now. People will probably think I'm stupid saying that, but there are a lot of quality players here."

McGuire could make his Robins debut on their return to the Super League at home against Wakefield on February 2, but Sheens is aware that the seven-time Grand Final winner will need time to adapt.

"Danny needs to get on the same wavelength as us given the year we had together," he said. "We still need to find him a five-eighth partner so we have plenty of work to do before we can get the best out of Danny."

The new Super League season starts on February 1 with defending champions Leeds Rhinos hosting Warrington Wolves live on Sky Sports.
