Andy Murray continues the defence of his Madrid Open title with another semi-final showdown against Rafael Nadal on Saturday.
The British No 1 and Nadal also met in the last four of the recent Monte Carlo Masters, with the Spaniard coming out on top, and they have now booked another clay-court meeting meeting, live on Sky Sports.
Murray made a strong start to the previous match in April as he claimed the opening set, but Nadal displayed his usual battling qualities to overwhelm the Scot for a 2-6 6-4 6-2 victory.
Nadal has rediscovered his dominant form on the red dirt, adding the Barcelona crown to his title in Monte Carlo, and he overcame a second set slip-up to complete a 6-0 4-6 6-3 win over Joao Sousa in the quarters.
Murray made more comfortable progress, brushing aside Tomas Berdych 6-3 6-2 in his semi, and could draw confidence from the fact he defeated Nadal in the final of last year's tournament.
Novak Djokovic headlines the other semi-final after a 6-3 6-4 win over Canada's Milos Raonic, who saved three match points before bowing out in straight sets.
The world No 1 will face sixth seed Kei Nishikori in the last four, who advanced after he fought back from a set down to defeat Nick Kyrgios 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-1) 6-3.
Kyrgios had earlier delighted the crowd with a remarkable hotdog shot that sailed above the stretching Nishikori.
