Roger Federer survived two match points before beating Tomas Berdych in a third-set tie-break in the Miami Open quarter-finals on Thursday.
Federer had to call upon all his resources of skill, poise and experience to edge Berdych 6-2 3-6 7-6 (8-6), extending his win streak over the Czech to seven matches.
Berdych served for the match at 6-4 in the tie-break, but could not convert, with Federer reeling off four points in a row, winning when Berdych double-faulted.
Earlier, the Swiss looked set for another emphatic victory after taking the first set.
Federer will play Nick Kyrgios in the last four after the Australian defeated Germany's Alexander Zverev 6-4 6-7 (9-11) 6-3.
"I definitely got very lucky at the end, but I think I showed great heart today," Federer said.
"I fought and Tomas definitely started to step it up, but it was a great match at the end."
On his match-up with Kyrgios, he added: "You all should tune in if you're not in the stadium."
Spain's Rafael Nadal and Italy's Fabio Fognini are already through to Friday's other semi-final.
Australian Open champion Federer, who also won at Indian Wells two weeks ago, has lost only once this year, to Russian Evgeny Donskoy in a third-set tie-break in Dubai.
