Watford are interested in signing Valencia centre-back Aymen Abdennour, according to Sky sources.

One of those sources has told Sky Sports News that the Hornets have made a £1.8m loan offer with an option to buy the player at £7m.

Abdennour is a 27-year-old Tunisia international defender who joined Valencia from Monaco in 2015 but struggled for first-team games last season.

He made only nine La Liga starts and 15 league appearances overall, having fallen behind Ezequiel Garay and Eliaquim Mangala, who was on loan from Manchester City.

New Watford boss Marco Silva is yet to add a new defender to his squad despite making five new additions already this summer.

He has signed Nathaniel Chalobah from Chelsea, Will Hughes from Derby, Tom Cleverley permanently from Everton, goalkeeper Daniel Bachman and Kiko Femenia.
