Liam Dawson picked up six wickets and James Vince smashed a century as Hampshire secured an 87-run win over Sussex at the Ageas Bowl in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

Skipper Vince did his chances of an England limited-overs recall no harm as he top-scored with 103 from 89 deliveries and Dawson also impressed with the bat in the Group B clash, hitting 73 not out as the Hawks reached 343-6, their best home limited overs total.

An impressive hundred from James Vince helped Hampshire to ease past Sussex with an 87-run win over Sussex in the One-Day Cup.

James Adams (34) and Adam Wheater (45) had earlier put on 56 for the second wicket after opener Michael Carberry had fallen to his second golden duck in a week.

Chris Wood also contributed useful late runs, making an unbeaten 38 from 25 balls as he and Dawson smashed 78 in seven overs.

Sussex lost Chris Nash early on as he fell lbw to Yasir Arafat before Matt Machan (93) and Luke Wright (58) added 110 early runs to get their innings going.

Wright then became the first of Dawson’s (6-47) victims, with the left-arm spinner helping bring about a dramatic batting collapse as five wickets fell for just 16 runs.

A late flurry from Sharks skipper Ed Joyce, who hit 48 off 47 deliveries, proved futile as they were bowled out for 256 in 41 overs as Hampshire got their campaign off to a winning start.

In Monday’s other Group B clash, Ravi Bopara stole the show as Essex eased to a seven-wicket win over Lancashire at Chelmsford with 17 overs to spare.

The all-rounder took 4-31 and pace bowler Reece Topley picked up two wickets as Lightning were skittled out for 161 at Chelmsford, Alex Davies top-scoring with 37.

Bopara then took control in Essex’s reply, hitting three maximums and 13 fours as he smashed an unbeaten 101 from 98 balls.

That knock included a second-wicket stand of 98 with opener Mark Pettini (37) as the Eagles finished on 163-3 to seal the win.
