Jason Roy had to miss England nets on Monday after suffering a back spasm and may have to sit out Wednesday's first ODI against South Africa in Bloemfontein.

The Surrey player hurt his back during the pre-session warm-up and will have to prove his fitness on Tuesday if he wishes to be considered for the international.

Should opener Roy's back problem persist, England could promote No 3 James Taylor or move Moeen Ali up the order.

Meanwhile, South Africa have called all-rounder David Wiese into their squad for the first two ODIs. He replaces Albie Morkel who has been laid low by back spasms.

Wiese, 32, made his ODI debut against New Zealand last August and played all three matches of that series. He has also featured in 12 T20 internationals.

The 30-year-old is a medium-pace bowler and destructive lower-order batsman. The hosts are still hoping veteran bowling all-rounder Morkel may yet be fit for the final three matches.

However, JP Duminy insists they are in good shape after winning their last two ODI series including, most recently, in India.

He said: "I don't think we're weakened. I think the replacements are good enough to stand in for those players.

"It's not an interruption in any way for us. We know what's needed as a squad and it's important for us to stay unified as a team, no matter who the personnel are.

"The confidence from the one-day cricket point of view has been pretty good. We've won our last two series.

"But we know this is a tough challenge that faces us and that England have also been playing really well in this format."

South Africa also added fast bowler Marchant de Lange to their squad following the withdrawal of Dale Steyn and the unavailability of Kyle Abbott.

Coach Russell Domingo said: "Marchant gives us more options with our fast bowlers because there is no Steyn, no [Vernon] Philander, no Abbott.

"The big concern is the fact that Kagiso Rabada and Morkel have played a lot of cricket of late and have bowled so many overs, we need to manage them over the next few days."
