Justin Thomas demonstrated impressive ingenuity to hole an incredible putt for birdie which ignited his charge up the leaderboard at the US Open.

Thomas, who won back-to-back PGA Tour titles in Hawaii in January and posted a 59 in the process, faced a slick putt from the fringe on the fifth green during his third round at Erin Hills, and going directly at the hole could have resulted in a long putt for par from way beyond the cup.

But he eyed up the contours and opted to aim sideways at a 90-degree angle to the target, hoping his ball would lose pace before tipping onto the putting surface towards the hole.

And the move reaped handsome rewards as the 24-year-old American judged his pace and angles to perfection as his ball dropped in the centre of the cup - the ultimate response to a bogey at the previous hole.

Thomas then parred the next, and he reeled off three straight birdies from the seventh to race into a share of the lead on a tightly-congested leaderboard in Wisconsin.
