New York Jets are one of the original AFL teams from the New York area and compete today in the modern NFL alongside a number of local rivals.
They are one of three teams that are based in the New York area; New York Giants, with whom they share a stadium, and Buffalo Bills, who play in the colder climes of the border between the USA and Canada.
Varying success is scattered across New York, with the one-time Super Bowl champions, the Jets, seeing some memorable moments over the years.
Struggles with consistency, though, have hampered their progress, especially when compared to the long and prolific history of the Giants, who are NFL veterans from the early 20th century.
The 2000 season saw the Jets feature in one of the greatest games in the history of the NFL, the Monday Night Miracle. Facing rivals, Miami Dolphins, the Jets were down 30-7 going into the fourth quarter and the game was all but over.
Some jaw-dropping, fearless aggression saw the Jets, led by quarterback Vinny Testaverde, pull off the biggest comeback in franchise history to take the game into overtime at 37-37. Jets kicker, John Hall, secured the victory for New York with a field goal in extra time.
It wasn't just Testaverde who could mastermind magnificent football for the Jets. Quarterbacks like Joe Namath and Chad Pennington propped up their offensive game with pin-point passing and league-best completion rates. Pennington finished his career with a 66 per cent completion rate, which still stands up in the NFL, while Namath threw them to an unforgettable victory in Super Bowl III.
In recent years, two successive appearances in the AFC Championship game in 2009 and 2010 promised big things with Rex Ryan in charge as head coach, but he and the Jets were finished after following that with four seasons without a winning record.
Todd Bowles brought the team back to winning ways in his first season in 2015 on his quest to rebuild the Jets into Super Bowl contenders.
