Unlucky loser bids for compensation

The Prix du Moulin at Longchamp next month is the likely next port of call for Moonlight Cloud. Trainer Freddie Head feels the filly would have won Sunday's Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville, but for meeting serious traffic problems. Following a narrow defeat to Black Caviar in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, the four-year-old was a superb winner of the Prix Maurice de Gheest at the start of the month. Boldly turned out just a week later and stepped up to a mile, Moonlight Cloud was badly hampered as she was making her challenge, effectively losing all chance of securing another Group One prize. There was still plenty to like about the way she stayed on for fourth, beaten less than two lengths by Excelebration. "She is very well, but she was very unlucky on Sunday. I think she should have won," said Head. "She got completely stopped in her run with two furlongs to go and did very well to come back like she did. "You don't see horses come back from things like that too often. "We'll see how she is, but if she is well and ready in time, I think she will go for the Prix du Moulin next on September 15."
