Dettori comes up short on Italian raid

Frankie Dettori could only finish second aboard Godolphin's Retrieve in the Gran Premio Jockey Club Italiano at San Siro on Sunday.

On the day when it had been announced that Dettori and Godolphin would be parting company after 18 years, victory in the Group One contest would have provided the ebullient jockey with the perfect departure.

However, Saeed Bin Suroor's five year old - who had won a Listed race at Newmarket last time out - was unable to cope with the challenge of the three year old Novellist in the mile and a half contest.

Having been held-up in last, the son of Rahy made progress turning into the straight and stayed on well to go second in the final furlong but could not get to grips with the winner.

Easy Winner

Andreas Wohler's son of Monsun ran out an easy four and a half length winner to gain a first top level success after finishing second in the German Derby to Champion Stakes fourth Pastorius and fourth behind Danedream on his two preceding starts.

Saeed bin Suroor commented on www.godolphin.com: "Retrieve has run well to finish second. He tried hard and was beaten by a better horse who had finished second in the German Derby."

Later on the card, Ralph Beckett's Pabusar failed to trouble the judge in the Group Three Premio Omenoni.

The four year old, who is without a win since his second career start in 2010, could only finish fifth in the five furlong contest which was won by favourite Noble Hachy.
