The New One works at Chepstow

The New One enjoyed a relatively easy canter around the Chepstow circuit ahead of racing at the Welsh venue.

The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained six-year-old finished an unlucky third in the Champion Hurdle last term before being made to work hard for a consolation victory in the Aintree Hurdle at the Grand National meeting.

The New One could make a full racecourse return at Kempton on October 19 and Twiston-Davies was keen to get him back in action ahead of that scheduled reappearance.

Working in company with stablemate Sybarite, The New One led throughout a full circuit of the course and while his companion tried to put a little pressure on in the final furlong, the dual Grade One winner appeared to remain hard on the bridle.

"It was a lovely little canter round," Twiston-Davies told At The Races.

"He's fit enough, but there's nothing like an outing to put him right. He's not tall but he's very, very strong. Cheltenham (in March) is what we're hoping (for), very much so - fingers crossed."

Sam Twiston-Davies took the reins for the workout and he was delighted with The New One's efforts.

He said: "What's lovely is he's come out of his work nicely. It was only really to help a younger horse out, but at the same time he's fresh and well and hit the line very well.

"He wouldn't be the tallest but he's like a tank and very strong. When he does want to take a tug, he really can.

"It was nice today to see him relax like that and not do too much, he's not blown very hard. It was just nice as he finished the last two furlongs well. It's nice to know where we are with him."
