In depth

Verdict

Compton Bolter may bring the winning run of Wunderwood to an end, with Desert Quest and Supremacy other leading contenders. Compton Bolter beat Supremacy in this event last year and went on to add to his tally in Listed company. Like the rest of Gerard Butler's stable, he had a dismal first half of the campaign, but has been showing just lately that his turn is near, and he is taken to improve on his third of four to Arc-bound Mubtaker in Newbury's Geoffrey Freer Stakes last week. He should hold Supremacy on a pound-better terms, and may have more to fear from Wunderwood who has improved so much that connections have entered him for the Melbourne Cup. He missed the Ebor as he would have had a seven-pound penalty and will prove a major threat. Desert Quest finished well to score at Ascot a fortnight ago and should have no problems with the extra trip and is another to enter calculations. Ex-Mark Johnston inmate Delsarte has failed to open his account so far in the Godolphin silks but remains a horse of potential and should not be ruled out entirely, but Compton Bolter, whose stable are now back in form, can land this for the second year running.
