Verdict

A decent handicap in which Defining may benefit from an assured pace to beat Flownaway, Hambleden, and stablemates Darasim and Coolbythepool. With Prairie Falcon and Hambleden sure to go a good clip there will be no hanging about and the lightly raced Defining can pounce to give James Fanshawe another big-race win. A multiple scorer last term, the son of Definite Article will appreciate a trip and should now be spot on after his narrow defeat at Windsor on what was only his second start of the season. The yard was out of form when he was pitched in at the deep end on his return in the Ormonde stakes and it came as no surprise that he blew up. A big show is expected here and he is likely to start as a solid favourite. Flownaway will be looking to come from off the pace as well and his only poor effort came in the Chester Cup. Mark Johnston won this 12 months ago with the lightly weighted Scott's View and Coolbythepool is a similar sort. He makes more appeal than stablemate Darasim who has his fair share of weight. Kieren Fallon rides Capitano Corelli for Paul Cole who was successful in 1999 with Mowbray, and it would be no surprise if he were to be placed. With the scope to progress further though, Defining looks the part.
