    In depth

    Verdict

It is becoming a habit of Frankie Dettori's in winning the first race on the card and he can repeat the feat again here with Prince Charming, who should appreciate this slightly easier company today, while Tournedos and Cornus will not make it easy for the selection. Neither will Irish raider Kay Two, who made the most of a good chance at the weights to win a Listed race at Tipperary at the start of this month. However, he will do very well to confirm that form, as he is now 6lb worse off with Tournedos and has already had his limitations exposed at this level in his homeland. To combat that, he has proved his ability to handle this sort of ground and certainly has place claims if he copes with the track on his first visit to Newmarket. The fore mentioned Tournedos - the game winner of the Molcomb Stakes in July - has held his own in high-class company since Goodwood and has to be respected again today. However, he will do very well to come good under his 5lb Group-three penalty and looks vulnerable today. A similar statement applies to Cornus, who found the selection too tough to deal with off level weights at Ascot in April and has to prove his fitness as he has not been seen out since. Conversely, Prince Charming was not beaten far in a strong renewal of the Middle Park Stakes here just over a fortnight ago and may have paid the price for trying to cut out the running in such exalted company. It will not be surprising to see different tactics employed this afternoon, as Dettori knows the Royal applause colt well having already won on him twice earlier in the season ¿ holding him up until halfway on each occasion. Similar patience in the saddle should suffice today and we are adamant that there is more to come from Prince Charming at this level.
