WOOLCOMBE FOLLY got Paul Nicholls day off to the best possible start with a fine performance under Ryan Mahon. The race was always likely to be staged at a blistering gallop with a number of proven front runners in the field and Ryan Mahon was keen to keep away from that early battle. Held up in mid-division, he asked his mount to get closer after the tenth and brought his horse to challenge the leader at the last - going away in taking fashion. Paul Nicholls will now be looking at graded company. The Game Spirit was mentioned as a possible target in despatches as was a possible crack at the French Champion Chase. He is currently a general 16/1 for the Cheltenham equivalent in March. Tanks For That was always in the mix and went on at the seventh. He did not do too much wrong bar meet a much superior rival and he is sure to be thereabouts in similar company again. Fiendish Flame was always going to be vulnerable to finishers but having cut out most of the work, he could not wrestle the lead back and hung right under pressure up the home straight. Cornas reportedly finished lame last month so connections will have been encouraged at the way he ran on, though both he and fifth placed, Tramantano, never really threatened to land this prize. Oh Crick was allowed to come home at his own pace though having travelled well and made some headway inside the final mile, this effort has to go down as a tad disappointing. I'm Delilah compromised her chance with an error at a vital stage and might be worth a look when tried back against her own sex.
