A dramatic conclusion to one of the best novice chases seen this season but in the end a ready winner as Realt Dubh pushed his Arkle claims to the fore. Ridden by Paul Carberry, the gelding was given a quiet ride throughout most of the race but as the leaders bunched up turning for home Carberry was sitting as quiet as a mouse in behind. Moving his horse between rivals off the turn for home he jumped to the front at the last and surged clear late on. The final fence fall of the bold front-running Saludos means it is harder than it may be to evaluate the win, however it was an impressive performance and it appears that Meade has uncovered a two mile chaser who may go on to match the exploits of the trainer's more illustrious hurdlers of the past. All eyes were on Mikael D'Haguenet before the race but he ran a lifeless race. Having fallen at the last on his reappearance (and chasing debut) in the Drinmore at Fairyhouse, he was a warm order to make amends today but the 4-7 favourite jumped right throughout. Paul Townend got after his mount before the final turn but his mount found little for pressure and he was soon eased. This is most certainly not his true running, and the way he emptied suggests something may have been amiss, and he has many questions to answer before his next start. One assumes that he will step out of graded company. Saludos deserves great credit and had every chance before departing. His jockey Robbie Power needed attention from the paramedics accordingly however he was able to limp off the track after several minute treatment. Torphichen made a fast-forward move before three out but having raced wide for a long way it may have left him running on empty late on; he'll win again before long but looks just short of this level. Noble Prince ran on really well for second and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him turn up at Cheltenham in the Arkle. The stiffer finish there would suit and he although he is a flat-bred son of Montjeu he could go near the very top over fences. Loosen My Load jumped to the front three out but was left behind in the final quarter of a mile. His trainer Henry de Bromhead won the race last year with eventual Arkle winner Sizing Europe but his stablemate looks a rung below that high level.
