A rather taking performance from the winner COSMIC SUN, who took some time to find his stride, but ultimately wheeled away for a comfortable success. The former Royal Ascot winner had stayed on well to win at Lingfield on his previous start, and he had to come from off the pace here due to a wide draw. However they went a strong early gallop, which by stringing the field out, meant that he could negotiate a safe passage to the rails. It also meant that the pace-setters would (in all likelihood) come back to the pack, and although he was still at the tail of the field turning in, the field had condensed so he didn't have too much ground to make up. He got a clear run before the two furlong marker (where the cutaway is) and once in the clear he managed to chase down the long-time leader Red Cadeaux with a furlong to run and then stretch away. He will go up in the weights for this, but it's not inconceivable that he can win again at one of the bigger meetings, with the caveat of a strong pace to chase. The runner-up was in the front-rank throughout and looked to have successfully slipped the field turning in. He stays well, so his jockey Eddie Ahern did everything right, and this was a return to form on the gelding's first run of the year. Lunar Victory was a major eye-catcher in third; he was keen in the early stages, as he raced with very little cover towards the outside of the pack. However he picked up well once they straightened for home and he will be a force to reckon with if he is granted a better draw wherever he goes next. It's entirely possible that he could be a Royal Ascot or Glorious Goodwood handicap winner in waiting. Ramona Chase was another who raced with the choke out somewhat so this makes his fourth-placed finish a fair effort, although he's probably just a tad high in the weights to be winning. Captain John Nixon flew up the handicap last season but ran with credit here, especially as he was checked in his run when trying to stay on in the final two furlongs. Averroes came next, and was disappointing. Backed into favouritism, Clive Cox's charge had a lovely tow through on the inside for the first mile. He then got a dream run turning for home, and was the first to lay down a challenge to Red Cadeaux. Ultimately that may have told, but he never got past the heels of that horse and it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see headgear tried on him this season. Mark Johnston's duo were disappointing further back, whilst Round Won hampered his own challenge by racing too freely in the first mile. Similar comments apply to Montaff had no cover at all, whilst King Olav never got to a better position than mid-division. Greylami got loose before the start and was withdrawn accordingly.
