A competitive handicap chase won by some useful sorts in the past and TANKS FOR THAT was completing a hat-trick in the contest for Nicky Henderson following successes for Dave's Dream and French Opera. The eight year old hasn't had an awful lot of racing and has had something of a chequered career over fences thus far in winning only once in 10 starts. He had always looked to possess the ability to rank higher though and it's possible that he may just be a late developer. Always in the front rank, he jumped well in the main and Barry Geraghty was able to get a breather into him running down the hill before good leaps at the last two obstacles sealed victory. He will, of course, face a hike in the weights but he doesn't handle winter ground so will be put away with the Grand Annual in mind and, with a good record when fresh, it would be no surprise to see him among the leading fancies come March. Havingotascoobydo made good ground from off the pace without threatening the winner. This was a big step up in class for Martin Keighley's novice and his inexperience was noticeable but this represented another step forwards and there should be more to come the six year old who was having just his fourth chase start. I'msingingtheblues was bought ahead of last season as a 'Saturday' horse for his owner and didn't let connections down; there was once a school of thought that he was better on a flat track and he did disappoint when a big springer in the market for the Grand Annual in March. There was nothing wrong with his effort here but he will go back up in the weights for his troubles and has only won once since 2008; he'll remain vulnerable to younger rivals. Keki Buku ran his best race to date over fences on his sixth start which offers hope for the season ahead that he can take advantage of a handicap mark that is lower than his rating over hurdles. Crack Away Jack - a smart hurdler and novice chaser - was the interesting horse in the race on his first run for new connections as he returned from injury; he ran a blinder and would have finished closer were it not for a mistake three out but unfortunately returned with an injury and it remains to be seen how serious it is. Rileyev's career took off last season with four straight victories over fences and he improved markedly on his reappearance to finish a never nearer sixth for a yard whose horses haven't really hit top form yet. His trainer's runners are always to be respected in the big handicaps at this course and it would be no surprise to see the six year old back here in March if he can pick up another prize or two over the winter in order to increase his mark sufficiently. Oh Crick isn't badly handicapped these days but just appeared to get outpaced having been close to the leaders coming down the hill; he may now need further.
