Wigan midfielder David Perkins has signed a new contract which will keep him at the DW Stadium until 2017.

Perkins was Latics boss Gary Caldwell's first signing of the summer and he has been ever-present in Sky Bet League One this season.

The 33-year-old, who moved to Wigan after his Blackpool contract expired, has now seen the one-year extension on that deal exercised.

"We knew what we were getting with Perks, so it's no surprise really that he has done so well," Caldwell said on his club's official website.

"But it's a measure of him as a professional and how well he looks after himself and how hard he trains that he has been able to perform so well, and as a club we should be rewarding that kind of commitment.

"Everyone can see what he gives us on the pitch, he's the sort of player that every team needs and typical of the man, there are no airs and graces, he just gets on with his job day-in, day-out and gives us great consistency.
