Liam Lawrence has become Bristol Rovers' first signing of the January transfer window.

Lawrence helped Shrewsbury win promotion from Sky Bet League 2 last season and has played over 500 games in a career which has also taken in Mansfield, Sunderland, Stoke, Portsmouth, Cardiff and Barnsley.

"I have a great deal of experience to offer, I'm a winner and want to do well," Lawrence told the official Rovers website after agreeing a deal with the League 2 club until the end of the season.

"I turned 34 a few weeks ago, but there is still petrol in the tank and fire in the belly.

"I hope I can bring something to the table and help them get promoted."

Lawrence was a team-mate of Darrell Clarke at his first club Mansfield, and the Rovers boss said he was delighted to add the midfielder to the Pirates' promotion-chasing squad.

"I really feel that his signing is a superb piece of business for the club," Clarke said.

"To bring someone of his calibre in, on a contract until the end of the season with no fee involved, is massive for me.

"Should we gain promotion, his reward will be another one-year contract and that's his incentive."

Shrewsbury boss Micky Mellon told his club's website: "It's no secret that he's one of our higher earners so it frees up some funds for me to try and strengthen the group.

"Liam has been great during his time here and I would like to thank him for being part of what we have achieved.

"He's at the age where he needs to be playing regular football and this move will hopefully give him that chance."
