Florian Thauvin is in France to finalise a return to Marseille on loan, according to Sky sources.
The Newcastle winger is on the verge of agreeing a deal until the end of the season barely five months after arriving in the Premier League for £12m.
Newcastle boss Steve McClaren called Thauvin "one of the best young players in Europe" back in August, but the 23-year-old has started just five games for the club.
And this month's arrival of Andros Townsend from Tottenham pushed him further away from the first-team picture.
Thauvin played twice for Marseille this season before joining Newcastle and cannot turn out for a third club between now and the summer.
