US Open: Tiger Woods' 2008 play-off triumph against Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines

The last US Open to go to a play-off was back in 2008 when 14-time major winner Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate after an enthralling 18-hole play-off at Torrey Pines.
The USGA-sanctioned US Open is the only one of the four majors to go to a 18-hole play-off and the 108th edition of the major went the full distance.
Woods, who had previously been involved in two major play-offs, was taking part in an 18-hole play-off for the first time.
Woods headed into the tournament in California with fitness doubts which surfaced after he suffered stress fractures in the aftermath of knee surgery earlier in the year.
Mediate was defeated on the first sudden-death hole of an absorbing play-off which went back and forth just as the tournament had done during the previous four days.
Woods had holed a treacherous 15-foot putt on the 72nd hole under extreme pressure to force the play-off.
Mediate seemed destined to secure his maiden major success but Woods never wilted despite struggling around the course in obvious discomfort.
The experienced Mediate forced Woods into holing birdie putts not only on Sunday's 18th hole to force the play-off but also Monday's 18th hole to force a sudden-death play-off.
However, it was Woods who triumphed and in doing so joined Jack Nicklaus in completing the career grand slam for the third time.
