Hey Gaman bravely made all of the running to win the Denford Stakes at Newbury.

Jame Tate's colt and 9-4 favourite Red Mist became embroiled in an almighty tussle inside the final furlong, but the former held on by a short head.

Jockey Martin Harley said of the 100-30 winner: "It was tough out there. The conditions were one thing, but the head-wind was another.

"He (Red Mist) pressed me a long way down but it was a good performance from a good horse.

"He's got a big heart."

Tate said: "He's brave and talented and likes to lead.

"The best horse won."

The Newmarket handler added: "It was a very brave performance in that ground into a head-wind.

"I would be nervous running him anywhere where the description didn't have the word 'soft' in the going.

"He will be aimed at the seven-furlong Group races now. You have got the Solario, the Champagne at Doncaster and then you dream of the Dewhurst at the end."

Simon Crisford said of runner-up Red Mist: "I am delighted with his run. He is obviously very inexperienced and he put in a huge effort there.

"He handled that ground and that was not an issue. He would prefer better ground as then his turn of foot comes into play.

"He's in the Champagne at Doncaster and that is a consideration. Sheikh Ahmed will make a plan for him."
