In depth

Verdict

No Tiger Roll this year but the Gigginstown colours, carried to victory in three of the last four renewals, will still be out in force again. Most of their quintet would have place claims on their best form but history and a proven lack of stamina may count against Jack Kennedy’s choice Farclas and no mare has won this in 70 years, which doesn’t bode well for the chances of Shattered Love. Milan Native may be the pick as he produced a strong staying performance to land the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir last year. Seven will carry the green and gold of J P McManus last carried to success in 2010. Last month’s Navan winner Any Second Now has been well supported and Anibale Fly runs in the race for the third time having finished fourth in 2018 and fifth in 2019. Canelo has had a good season but, from a handicapping perspective, CLOTH CAP is the one to beat as he’s been raised 14lb since the weights were framed. It could also be argued that he has the best handicap form in the race having turned the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury into a procession in November. He then won his prep race at Kelso with the minimum of fuss and is a sound stayer who has never looked like falling in any of his 11 chase starts. He can give owner Trevor Hemmings a fourth win in the great race. Burrows Saint also looks a perfect type for this as he won the Irish Grand National in 2019 with stablemate Acapella Bourgeois, who beat him on worse terms recently at Fairyhouse, third. Magic Of Light was runner-up here in 2019 but has 5lb more to carry this year while the going may not be testing enough for Lord Du Mesnil and Kimberlite Candy’s lack of recent action is off-putting. Discorama also returns from a break but has attracted ante-post support, though Mister Malarky might be best of those likely to start at bigger odds as he ran well at Kempton following wind surgery and was second on the Mildmay course on this day two years ago. Bristol De Mai is the class act but has the weight to match and tends to reserve his best for Haydock.
