Verdict

Barry Hills won the Jersey Stakes 12 months ago with Ouqba and has claims of doing so again with his representative RED JAZZ, who was a good second to Field Of Dream in the King Charles II Stakes at Newmarket last month. He can go one better today, making the most of the weight that he receives from Free Judgement and Shakespearean. Saeed Bin Suroor's colt was a welcome winner for the yard when successful at Epsom during the Derby meeting but he has a 3lb penalty to carry for that Surrey Stakes success and may have to settle for minor honours today. Kaptain Kirkup has a bit to find with Shakespearean on running at Epsom and of more interest may be the William Haggas-trained Quarrel, who is surely better than he showed at Haydock last time but he is hard to back after that effort. John Gosden's Meezaan was not disgraced in the French 2,000 Guineas last time and has to be considered, while Jim Bolger's Free Judgement is bound to be popular following his second to Canford Cliffs in the Irish 2,000 and has an obvious chance but he does have a penalty to carry for earlier successes in Group 3 races and that may prevent him from resuming winning ways. Luca Cumani's Field Of Dream belied odds of 33/1 when getting the better of the selection at Newmarket and has every chance of beating him again but Red Jazz was only narrowly beaten that day and connections will have learned from that previous run at headquarters.
