Verdict

The market should provide the best guide to the outcome of this contest. Effort and Visterre are likely to be prominent in the market owing to connections. The Johnston yard have saddled the winner of this event twice in the last three years and Effort is related to some smart performers. While it is noteworthy that riders higher-up the pecking order at Johnston's are not here to take the mount, he might prove too strong for his rivals. Bryan Smart's filly Visterre makes no appeal on breeding but fetched a respectable amount as a yearling. A low draw has to be overcome so we will pass her over today. Cool Sonata has the benefit of experience but fluffed his copybook slightly when disappointing last time but the form of his debut is not bad, the winner contests a conditions event at Beverley on Saturday. Effort is the speculative selection to land the opener but the market should tell more.
