A race big in quantity and low in quality may go to Star Trooper ahead of Ball Games, Peter's Imp and Private Jessica. Bets are definitely best kept to a minimum here in a race that should carry a government health warning, but Sandy Forster's nine-year-old Star Trooper is lumbered with the vote. Although his last win came two years ago on heavy ground at Carlisle, he has tumbled down down the weights since, and showed there was a race to be won of this nature when second at Sedgefield recently. The third was a long way behind, and although that was over much further than today's contest, he at least has shown a semblance of form. Ball Games was a bit unlucky at Hexham the time before last when his young rider lost his irons, but he did not improve on a return to that track next time, and now has the assistance of Graham Lee. That will help his cause, but Jimmy Moffatt's charge hardly inspires confidence. Peter's Imp is fully exposed and has topweight but has won here in the past, while Private Jessica was a bit keen when fourth here last week. They appear to be the main contenders unless the market speaks in favour of anything else, and for the winner we return to Star Trooper.
