Verdict

BIG BUCK'S has dominated the staying hurdle division since 2009 and there are few signs that his powers are on the wane. He trounced today's rivals Dynaste, Mourad and Five Dream in the Cleeve Hurdle over C&D in January having sauntered to an equally impressive success in the Long Walk at Ascot earlier when Five Dream and Dynaste were again well beaten, as was Cross Kennon. Paul Nicholls' nine-year-old usually finds more if challenged and can complete a four-timer in this Grade 1 contest. It's a long time since there was an Irish winner of this race but they are strongly represented this season with Thousand Stars, fourth in last year's Champion Hurdle and subsequently second to Oscar Whisky at Aintree, having decent claims. He won a Grade 1 over 3m2f at Auteuil last June and has been racing over shorter trips since. Mikael D'Haguenet disappointed when beaten by Mourad at Naas, however, and Voler La Vedette's bubble was burst by Zaidpour at Gowran in January and the mare probably has a few pounds to find if she's to bounce back here. Oscar Whisky is a classy sort and has won three times over 2m5f here as well as finishing third in last year's Champion Hurdle. But it remains to be seen if he'll stay this far in a strongly-run race.
