In depth

Verdict

Russki has been a revelation since the application of blinkers and he can take this race at the main expense of Celtic Sultan and Dandy Nicholls' pair Regal Parade and Joseph Henry. David Simcock's gelding has flourished on the all-weather this winter, winning four of his six artificial surface starts. His recent victory proved that he was ahead of the handicapper and a 6lb rise in the weights may not be enough to curtail his improvement. Celtic Sultan is now five pounds above his highest winning mark, but Tom Tate's gelding was so consistent last season that one assumes he can be competitive off his mark of 100 today. He has run well here before and can go well assuming it stays dry. Plum Pudding's best runs have come on a straight track, whilst Captain Jacksparra should improve on a recent outing but a wide draw makes life tough. Joseph Henry has fared well on the draw front and is due to go up four pounds in the future. Along with his consistent stablemate Regal Parade, he rates as a danger. Dhaular Dhar won this race last year and his two recent runs should have blown away all the cobwebs, so from stall two he needs plenty of respect. Extraterrestrial obliged at Thirsk earlier in May, and with his earlier form looking rock solid, he should not be far away. A typically competitive start, however Russki is taken to oblige.
