In depth

Verdict

Adventurist doesn't have the best of draws, but this progressive gelding is nonetheless fancied to follow up his Epsom victory; Stretton and The Fairy Flag could prove best of the rest. James Fanshawe's gelding was recording his first career victory when swooping late to land the spoils in a big field at Epsom last time. Just three pounds higher in the ratings here, and with Jamie Spencer aboard, he is fancied to follow up here, in what is a similar type of race. Alan Bailey loves to saddle a winner here, and has two in this race, the pick of which just could be The Fairy Flag. She won an amateurs' handicap over a mile and a half here last month and has shaped well in defeat in her last two outings. Stretton has a tremendous record here, having won twice and finished third in just three attempts at the Roodee, so James Bethell's horse merits the utmost respect. He didn't enjoy the best of runs when third at Ripon last time, and looks a big danger to the selection. But Adventurist may just be a step ahead of the handicapper, and is taken to score again.
